Dispelling 10 False Myths about Job Interviews

Sep 19, 2024

ICYMI - Earlier this week we hosted a workshop where we dispelled 10 false myths about job interviews.

Did you know that the average job gets over 200 applications?  With services and tools like LinkedIn Apply - it’s so easy for people to apply for jobs - making it more difficult than ever for good candidates to be seen. And then, if you’re lucky enough to get into the interview process - you can’t afford to make any mistakes.

We uncovered 10 false myths to help you better understand the job interview process, and how you can be the best candidate.

‘It’s not the most qualified candidate candidate who gets the job, it’s the person who interviews the best who gets the job.’

-Howard Cattie, Founder & CEO, Career Oyster

The first myth we discussed was:

The job description is accurate.

The truth? Job descriptions not often not accurate. On average they are 50% accurate. The problem for you as the candidate, is that you don’t know what 50% of the job description is accurate.

Job descriptions change, and as hiring managers interview candidates, their requirements can evolve.  And what matters most to the recruiter can be different from what matters most to the hiring manager.  Also, there may be openings at a company that you are not aware of or haven’t opened yet. Having the right interview strategy can help you uncover that.

Remember, people hire people, not resumes.
